How are the powers of tan(x) independent from each other?

I'm trying to understand how the set {tanx, tan²x, ... , tanⁿx} for a finite n is a linearly independent set. The question came up from studying the method of undetermined coefficients for ordinary differential equations. Anyone know how to prove this?
